Lovecraft's Chin

LOVECRAFT'S CHIN
, a slim volume of poems about the man himself, his chin and his pantheon, has just been published and the ebook edition will be a free download for five days (from July 3rd to July 7th). But the paperback is a permafree PDF download too. This will be my last self-published project before I leave India one week from now.

The free PDF can be downloaded here. Only click on this link if you really want to download it, as the download should start automatically.

I think it's funny and I hope you will too, though if you are a fanatic for Lovecraft you might not. That's the risk we take when we do things like this. It's unfortunate, but some devotees of the Weird take things far too seriously, and then they get angry, and their anger becomes bitterness, and really the whole thing becomes even weirder than the Weird fiction they believe they are defending. My own view is that Weird fiction (or fiction of any sort) doesn't need to be defended. It can defend itself perfectly well.

Anyway, the book is there to be read for free and I will say only one more thing about it. Lovecraft often disparaged people, entire races of people in fact, so any disaparagement or mockery that comes his way is entirely his own fault. He has no one to blame but himself. As for the argument that he was "of his time", that's fine: I am also "of my time", so if his foibles can be justified that way, so can mine. Let us at least try to be logical and consistent.

Comments:
Rhys, what happened to your Twitter account? You’re sorely missed.

I was permanently suspended for "platform manipulation" (whatever that means). It could mean that I promoted 'too many' books, or maybe I said something left wing and/or liberal (I have heard stories that non-right wing people are being forced off the platform, though how that works I can't imagine)...

I am, however, now on Bluesky and Meta, if you happen to be on either of those. And on Facebook too, of course :-)

I have to think it has to do with the recent mutual promotion you participated in with other authors. That's the only new factor. I've never seen you post anything political at all, though you may have in past times. Whatever it was, it is ridiculous.

I'll probably migrate eventually as Elon struggles to monetize Twitter; he'll surely make subscriptions absolutely necessary for a decent experience, before long. But it's hard to give up my lists and follows and start from scratch, and I don't relish the prospect of hopping among other green social media sites which may or may not work out (also Threads is phone only, not my main dwelling place).

In any event, thanks for all your delightful literary works. I'd say please don't stop, but clearly engaging this part of your mind is as necessary as breathing out and breathing in to you, lucky for us!

For myself, being removed from Twitter wasn't such a big deal, as I never really used it much. It tended to be an afterthought for me. But I can imagine that for people who use it a lot, who have lots of friends there, or who conduct successful business on the site, the recent Elon-driven degradations of the platform must be very demoralising.

You are right that I rarely posted anything political. It must have been to do with the book promotions...
